FAU Presents Heinz-Otto Peitgen to Speak on the Chaos Theory and Its Impact on Tumors
BOCA RATON, FL (March 3, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University presents Dr. Heinz-Otto Peitgen to speak on "The Science of Chaos and its Impact on Surgical Planning" as part of FAU's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science Frontiers in Science Lecture Series. The lecture will begin on Thursday, March 17 at 4 p.m. at FAU's Boca Raton campus, Charles E. Schmidt Biomedical Center, Room 126, 777 Glades Rd.
The lecture will focus on the discovery of chaos and its impact on our scientific world view using life and computer experiments. Chaos, in reference to the chaos theory, refers to an obvious lack of order in a system, but will obey particular laws or rules in that system. The two main themes of chaos theory are the ideas that systems, no matter how complex they may be, rely upon an underlying order and that very simple systems can cause very complex behaviors or events.
This lecture will present breakthrough scientific research and results dedicated to the detection, evaluation and elimination of risks in tumor surgery. Special attention will be given to research on the brain, lung and liver. Finally, the lecture will discuss applications of these new tools for living-donor-liver-transplantation.
Peitgen, a German native, is currently a professor of mathematics and biomedical sciences at FAU and the University of Bremen, Germany. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1973 at the University of Bonn. In 1992, Peitgen was elected as a member to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 1995, he founded the Center for Medical Diagnostic Systems and Visualization (MeVis) GmbH, which he chairs as president and CEO.
Peitgen won a Certificate of Merit for the achievement of MeVis and was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of the First Class by the President of Germany in 1996 for his advancements in science and research in computer aided radiology and surgery.
The Frontiers in Science Lecture Series, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science with support from FAU's Lifelong Learning Society Endowed Professorship. For more information on the series, call 561-297-2954.
