FAU's College of Nursing to Host Gerontology Conference
BOCA RATON, FL (March 29, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing is hosting its fifth Annual Gerontology Conference. The conference will be held on Friday, April 1 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Live Oak Pavilion in the University Center on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
The overall focus of the conference, themed "Celebrating Our Cultural Heritage as We Age," is to engage both professionals and the community in an intensive one day learning experience in areas focusing on the older adult. The conference will highlight various topics, including cultural tradition, storytelling, herbal supplements and the technology gap. Conference workshops will include presentations by experts in the areas of health care, fitness, herbs and supplements, storytelling, language spirituality, rituals, traditions and other important topics. Free health screenings, such as blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, PSA and Mini-Mental Health screenings, are planned.
Guest speakers include Dr. May Wykle and Chester Higgins, Jr. Wykle is the dean of the School of Nursing at Case Western University. Her numerous honors include recognition as one of Northeastern Ohio's Most Influential Women (Northern Ohio Live magazine); a Distinguished Alumni Award from Case Western Reserve University; delegate to the White House Conference on Aging; Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America; and Distinguished Nurse-Scholar of the National Institute on Aging.
Higgins photography can be found within the pages of The New York Times, where he has been a staff photographer since 1975. As one of the premiere African-American photographers working today, he continues to exhibit in museums throughout the country and abroad. Higgins is the recipient of grants from the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the International Center of Photography, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Andy Warhol Foundation. His photographs have appeared in Look, Life, Time, Newsweek, Fortune, Ebony, Essence and Black Enterprise. He will be available after his presentation for signing of his book "Elder Grace: The Nobility of Aging".
