FAU to Hold Model United Nations Simulation
BOCA RATON, FL (March 17, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University's Peace Studies Program will host its ninth annual South Florida Model United Nations simulation on Saturday, April 2 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the University Center on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. Area high school, community college and university students will represent countries on three United Nations committees -- security and conflict; social, economic and humanitarian; and legal. Students will play the role of diplomats and ambassadors engaged in multilateral diplomacy.
"The goal of the conference is to give students insight into the world around them and mold them into better speakers and debaters," said Jeffrey Morton, director of the Peace Studies Program and associate professor of political science at FAU.
Morton initiated the Peace Studies Program and the Model United Nations course at FAU in 1996. Students have to apply for acceptance into the course. In addition to participation in the model UN in South Florida, students also go to the National Model United Nations Conference, the world's largest university-level simulation of the United Nations. The fall 2004 conference was held in Chicago with over 2,000 students from across the United States in attendance. FAU's sixteen students represented the countries of Algeria and Lebanon.
