FAU Hosts Yale Whiffenpoofs

BOCA RATON, FL (December 1, 2004) - The world's oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group, the Yale Whiffenpoofs, is coming to Florida Atlantic University's Boca Raton campus on Saturday, January 8 for an afternoon of "Art and A Cappella." The event will start at 12:30 p.m. with a tour of the contemporary art exhibition "Me, Myself and I" on display in FAU's Schmidt Center Gallery. The Whiffenpoofs will then perform at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students. FAU's Boca Raton campus is located at 777 Glades Road.

The Yale Whiffenpoofs is a group of 14 senior men at Yale who perform songs from many different styles and eras, ranging from classic jazz to English folk songs to Motown hits of the 1960s. The group was founded in 1909 and has become one of Yale's most celebrated and hallowed traditions. In recent years, the group has performed in the White House, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to audiences that have included Presidents Reagan, Bush and Clinton, Mother Theresa and the Dalai Lama. The group has also played on Saturday Night Live and The West Wing. This appearance at FAU is part of the Whiffenpoofs' "World Tour," with portions of the proceeds going to the Whiffenpoofs' Children's Literacy Initiative and FAU's School of the Arts Scholarship Fund.

Attendees at "Art and A Cappella" will also enjoy a dose of more contemporary art with a tour of "Me, Myself & I." The exhibition presents a lively selection of contemporary work made over the past five years by a group of emerging and recognizable artists who are investigating the historically rich realm of self-portraiture. The exhibition was curated by Paul Laster and Renee Riccardo and includes works by Anthony Goicolea, Sofia Hulten, Guy Richards Smit, Natalia Benedetti and the artist team of Diana Shpungin and Nicole Engelman. The exhibition runs through Saturday, January 29 in FAU's Schmidt Center Gallery.

For more information about "Art and A Cappella" or to purchase tickets, call the Arts Update hotline at 561-297-2977 or visit www.fau.edu/artsupdate. Tickets may also be purchased by emailing artstickets@fau.edu, or they may be purchased at the event one hour prior to show time.
