FAU Student Government Presents Lee Ryan Miller To Speak On His Teaching Experiences In Las Vegas
BOCA RATON, FL (November 24, 2004) - Florida Atlantic University's Student Government will host Political Science Professor Lee Ryan Miller to speak on his book, Teaching Amidst the Neon Palm Trees, which chronicles his experiences while teaching at a college in Las Vegas. The event will take place on Tuesday, November 30 at 2 p.m. in the Senate Chambers Room of the University Center, Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Rd.
The book is based on Miller as a young professor at the Community College of Southern Nevada. With the assistance of Senator Harry Reid, he was able to set up an innovative study abroad program that made it possible for economically challenged students to participate. Miller had no idea that someone had other plans for the money earmarked for the needy students, someone who would stop at nothing to crush Miller's plans.
This non-fiction work weaves an amusing tale of teaching at a community college in "Sin City" with the unpredictable twists and turns of a scandal involving some of the most powerful figures in the state.
"A lot of very powerful people in Las Vegas are furious about what I've revealed," said Miller. "I am looking forward to speaking with the FAU community about the book."
For more than a decade, Miller has taught political science and economics at various colleges and universities in the United States and Japan. He studied at Brandeis University, Oxford University, and Middlebury College. Miller received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.
