FAU Police Department Honors Its Best
BOCA RATON, FL (November 18, 2004) - Florida Atlantic University's Police Department honored its own this month as Police Chief Dolores Danser announced this year's police awards during a special awards ceremony. Eight awards were given out, including Officer of the Year and Civilian of the Year.
"Officer of the Year" was awarded to Officer Luis Santana. Santana is a motorcycle officer who volunteered this past year to conduct a child safety seat clinic during the National Night Out event at the Town Center Mall. Santana is also responsible for managing and coordinating the efforts of a first time grant program, "Buckle Up for Safety," which brought seatbelt and child safety seat awareness to the FAU community. In addition, he represented FAU on last year's Toys for Tots run which was attended by law enforcement officers from all over South Florida. "Luis is very visible in the community, enforcing traffic laws and providing education," said Danser. "His volunteer efforts are definitely felt throughout the community."
"Civilian of the Year" was awarded to Senior Systems Programmer Patrick Garmon. During the past year, Garmon has participated in or supervised the installation and implementation of several major computer and technical projects, including a new Traffic and Parking decal system and switchovers of camera and card access systems in the University Housing areas. He also volunteers as a member of the Traffic Appeals Board and participates in the Child Safety Seat program administered through the Department. "Patrick has a 'can do' attitude and takes on any task with a smile," said Danser.
Other awards were given to Detective Thomas Hickox for Valor-Bravery, Gail Hemme and Linda Fowler for Customer Service, Officer Guy Shumanski for Meritorious Service, Officer Darren Courtney for Special Recognition and Sergeant Tammy Di Grazia for Community Service.
