FAU Students Awarded Tuckfield Scholarship
BOCA RATON, FL (August 27, 2004) - Five of
the 2004 Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Business
Scholarships were awarded to graduate students in Florida
Atlantic University's College of Business.
Winning $5,000 of the total $17,000, Tuckfield
scholarship recipients were Anthony Hugh Hudson and Beverly
Electra Cordner, general MBA Program; Catherine Odile
Gostomski, Accounting; Teneshia Diahann Taylor, Weekend MBA
Program and Shawann Lonzetta Bryant, general MBA student
who has not yet declared a concentration.
"It feels wonderful to be a recipient of such a prestigious award," said Bryant. "I am truly honored to be among such an elite group of candidates."
The scholarship is offered to African-American students who are enrolled full-time in a graduate business degree program at a Florida university. Applicants for the scholarship must be United States citizens and residents of South Florida. In addition, applicants must submit a two-page essay entitled "Why I Should Be Awarded a Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Business Scholarship."
Cordner's essay focused on realizing Jacki Tuckfield's dream of promoting diversity, and having more African-Americans in the executive, administrative and managerial levels of the workforce, especially in South Florida. She encouraged as many African-Americans as possible to continue their pursuit of academic excellence at graduate levels, citing the Tuckfield scholarship as a good avenue to pursue this goal.
"Past and current scholarship recipients can mentor young, aspiring African-Americans, and encourage them to pursue graduate degrees, so that they can begin their ascent into upper management positions," said Cordner, a second time recipient of this scholarship.
The JTMGBS Fund was created by Drs. Jack and Gloria Tuckfield in memory of their daughter Jacki, a native Miamian, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Management degree from FAU before her untimely death in July 1997, at the age of 25.
The ceremony honoring these recipients was held on Tuesday, August 3 during the Seventh Annual Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Business Scholarship Fund Awards Program held at the Biscayne Bay Marriott Hotel, Miami.
