Lafferty Retires After 13 Years
of Service at FAU
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (June 29, 2004) -
Dr. Jerry Lafferty, vice president of Florida
Atlantic University's Treasure Coast Campus since
2000, retires on June 30. Dr. Lafferty served 24
years as an administrator at several universities.
"Over the course of the past 13 years, Jerry
Lafferty has made major contributions to the growth
and development of Florida Atlantic University," said
FAU President Frank T. Brogan. "In addition to
providing energetic leadership for FAU's Treasure
Coast Campus since 2000, he guided the College of
Education through nine years of rapid expansion. In
both positions of leadership, he worked tirelessly to
bring the educational opportunities offered by FAU to
the people of South Florida. We thank him for a job
well done and wish him well as he begins his
well-earned retirement."
Dr. Lafferty began working at FAU in 1991 as dean of the College of Education. During nine years as dean, he became known state-wide as an energetic innovator, advocating many successful initiatives such as the addition of ESOL requirements into FAU's elementary education program and the expansion of the College of Education's course offerings to the Jupiter and Port St. Lucie campus locations. Under his direction, the college's enrollment and faculty numbers nearly doubled, and he oversaw two successful NCATE accreditations.
As vice president of the Treasure Coast Campus, Dr. Lafferty managed the rapid development of the campus after the construction of the IRCC/FAU Joint-Use facilities. His efforts toward the expansion of academic programs and the unique partnership with Indian River Community College have resulted in a steady enrollment growth pattern. Dr. Lafferty is proud of FAU's successful working relationship with IRCC. "Dr. Massey and his team have stood behind the Joint Campus, and our cooperation has greatly increased the higher education opportunities on the Treasure Coast," said Lafferty.
"Although Jerry Lafferty seeks the quiet life of retirement, I will always remember the loud voice and big stick he carried in championing public education. His enthusiasm and passion for higher education was inspiring. All the best to you, dear friend," remarked Senator Ken Pruitt.
"My experience at FAU has been an exciting challenge and a wonderful opportunity to meet many friends within the University and the communities it serves," said Lafferty. "I am leaving the campus at a time of phenomenal growth that can be attributed in part to the tireless support of Senator Ken Pruitt. I take with me a deep appreciation for the Treasure Coast Campus staff, Advisory Board and local supporters who have helped create a great campus and a valuable resource to the surrounding communities. I have grown very fond of this area over the past four years, and I am looking forward to my retirement in Vero Beach."
