Award-Winning Science Writer Lectures at FAU
BOCA RATON, FL (April 15, 2004) - The Chastain Foundation of Palm Beach sponsored the final 2003/2004 Frontiers in Science lecture presented by Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.
Deborah Blum, Pulitzer-Prize-winning science writer and professor of journalism at the University of Wisconsin, spoke on research conducted by psychologist Harry Harlow and his team of scientists who revolutionized parenting skills based on their work with monkeys. Their research indicated that offspring need affection to become whole stable adults. From the early 1900s to the late 1940s, it was widely thought that too much affection given to children by parents would produce weak, wimpy adults.
Prof. Blum's book on Harlow's research, Love at Goon Park: Harry Harlow and the Science of Affection, was on the New York Times Best Seller list for several weeks.
