FAU Campuses Come Together for Football
Unity Run
BOCA RATON, FL (March 16, 2004)
The Florida Atlantic University
football team will scatter to the outer FAU campuses
and relay run back to the Boca Raton campus and the
Tom Oxley Athletic Center in a unifying
gesture.
First, on Wednesday, March 17,
FAU football head coach Howard Schnellenberger will
visit all six campuses via helicopter to exchange
gifts. Then, on Saturday, March 20, two separate
teams will take these gifts from the Jupiter and
Broward campuses and relay run to the Boca Raton
campus.
At the John D. MacArthur
campus in Jupiter, 5353 Parkside Drive, they will be
holding a "kickoff" for the event on Wednesday, March
17 at 2 p.m. Football players and coaches will visit
and Coach Schellenberger will arrive via helicopter.
There will be a brief presentation and exchange of
symbolic gifts. The gift given by the campus is a
specially designed owl, created by Dr. Jacqueline A.
Kern, Director of Student Affairs for the Harriet L.
Wilkes Honors College. A football video entitled "The
Dream Lives On," will be shown and cookies and
lemonade will be served.
On Saturday, a group of FAU
alumni will gather at Shula's Restaurant at the
Sheraton Yankee Trader, 321 North Fort Lauderdale
Beach, at 3 p.m. to cheer the runners as they travel
along A1A. As the players run along the beach, they
will be joined by FAU distinguished alumni Fort
Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle, Greater Fort Lauderdale
Chamber President Christopher Pollack. They will be
riding in convertibles and tossing out FAU goodies to
those observing the unity run. There will also be a
banner plane with the message, FAU football, Be
part of it!
Much of the football
teams support comes from individuals who attend
or have attended the FAU satellite campuses, said
Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger. Our football
team wants to extend a special thanks to all fans in
south Florida, but especially those on our sister
campuses, by making this run a symbolic event that
solidifies how strongly we feel about their
support.
The shuttle run will conclude
approximately 6 pm, Saturday, March 20 at the Tom
Oxley Center, on the Boca Raton campus.
