FAU Hosts Lecture Series on Autism
North Carolina professor will speak on improving social skills for people with Autism

Boca Raton, FL (March 10, 2004) – The Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disability (CARD) will present a lecture on autism by Dr. Gary Mesibov, director of the statewide autism support agency for the state of North Carolina. The lecture will take place in the Majestic Palm Room at FAU’s University Center on the Boca Raton campus on Friday, March 19 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Mesibov will speak on “Enhancing Social Capacity for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.” The lecture will build on the Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH) theme of understanding the unique outlook of each person with autism.

Mesibov is the director of TEACCH and professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Brandeis University and will receive an honorary doctorate at the University of Mons-Hainaut in Belgium for university training and public school implementation of TEACCH methods in Belgium.

TEACCH is an internationally recognized organization that pioneered the use of visual supports for Autism Spectrum Disorder learners and now innovates with unique approaches to enhancing social capacity. The agency focuses on the individual with autism and the development of a program around the individual’s skills, interests and needs.

This is the last of a three part autism lecture series coordinated by Dr. Jack Scott, associate professor of exceptional student education at FAU, and by CARD. For more information call 561-297-0392.
