FAU Hosts Lecture Series on
Autism
North Carolina professor will speak on
improving social skills for people with Autism
Boca Raton, FL (March 10,
2004)
The Florida Atlantic University
Center for Autism and Related Disability (CARD) will
present a lecture on autism by Dr. Gary Mesibov,
director of the statewide autism support agency for the
state of North Carolina. The lecture will take place in
the Majestic Palm Room at FAUs University Center
on the Boca Raton campus on Friday, March 19 at 7 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Mesibov will speak on
Enhancing Social Capacity for Individuals with
Autism Spectrum Disorders. The lecture will
build on the Treatment and Education of Autistic and
Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH)
theme of understanding the unique outlook of each
person with autism.
Mesibov is the director of
TEACCH and professor of psychiatry and psychology at
the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He
received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Brandeis
University and will receive an honorary doctorate at
the University of Mons-Hainaut in Belgium for
university training and public school implementation
of TEACCH methods in Belgium.
TEACCH is an internationally
recognized organization that pioneered the use of
visual supports for Autism Spectrum Disorder learners
and now innovates with unique approaches to enhancing
social capacity. The agency focuses on the individual
with autism and the development of a program around
the individuals skills, interests and
needs.

The FAU Center for Autism and Related
Disability (CARD) provides services to persons with
autism and their families in Palm Beach County. The
Center serves as the satellite office of the
University of Miami CARD. CARD centers are funded
by the Florida legislature.
