FAU Friends of Yiddish Present the Bisel Film Festival
Boca Raton, FL (February 6, 2004) The Florida Atlantic University Friends of Yiddish present the 2004 Bisel Yiddish Film Festival. The film showings will take place on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road, at the Education Building, Room 119. Each film will start at 3:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The festival movies and dates are:
Wednesday, February 11- Mizreh un Mayrev/East and West will be shown silent with English and Yiddish inter-titles. In a comedic film about assimilation and Jewish values, sophisticated New Yorker Morris Brown travels back to his village to attend his niece's traditional wedding. There he encounters the rambunctious Mollie, whose hi-jinks include boxing, and teaching other young villagers to shimmy. Mollie meets her match, however, in an engaging young yeshiva scholar who forsakes tradition and joins the secular world to win her heart.
Wednesday, February 25 Yiddle with His Fiddle in Yiddish, with English subtitles. The classic Yiddish language musical-comedy based on the story by Konrad Tom. has been called the best Yiddish motion picture of all time. Molly Picon plays a shtetl girl who, disguised as a boy, goes off with her father and a band of traveling musicians into the Polish countryside.
The Friends of Yiddish is a group of individuals interested in promoting the study of Yiddish language and culture at FAU. Membership is $10 to support the purchase of Yiddish books for the Molly Fraiberg Collection at FAU, student programming in Yiddish and other events.
