FAU Hosts Lecture By Douglas Brattebo On

“Achieving the Democratic Peace”

Professor and Author on the Presidency and National Security Participates in FAU Presidential Symposia Lecture Series

BOCA RATON, FL (February 19, 2004) - Florida Atlantic University’s “Presidential Symposia” Lecture Series presents Dr. Douglas Brattebo, who will be speaking on the topic of “Achieving the Democratic Peace.” The first of two lectures will be held on Thursday, March 4 at 3:45 p.m. in the Barry and Florence Friedberg Auditorium on the Boca Raton Campus, 777 Glades Road. The second lecture will be at Abacoa Crown Theater, 4688 Main Street, in Jupiter, on Friday, March 5 at 12:15 p.m.

Brattebo will chronicle threats to world peace in the modern era and efforts by the U.S. and other governments to achieve peace. He will also focus on current and future actions to sustain a democratic peace, what has to happen and the actions involved.

Brattebo is an associate professor of political science at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He is an expert on peace studies and currently in the process of publishing a book on the U.S. Navy and the war on terrorism. Brattebo was awarded the prestigious Apgar Award for excellence in teaching and scholarship. The award was established in 1996 by Mahlon Apgar, IV and Anne Demarest Nelson Apgar to recognize and reward individual faculty members at the Naval Academy.

The “Presidential Symposia” is coordinated by Dr. Robert P. Watson, assistant professor of political science at FAU, and sponsored by the FAU Lifelong Learning Society. This is the final lecture of an eight-week lecture series. For more information, call 561-297-3171.
