FAU's Theatre Department Presents "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead"
BOCA RATON, FL (January 28, 2004) - Florida Atlantic University's School of the Arts presents the Tony-award winning comedy "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead," which takes an irreverent look behind the scenes of Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Performances are February 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. and February 15 and 22 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. Individual tickets may be purchased for $15, with group discounts available. FAU faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $10 with ID and FAU students may receive tickets for free with ID.
"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" is the story of two minor characters from Shakespeare's "Hamlet," Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who are Hamlet's school chums. They have been called to Denmark by Hamlet's uncle, the King of Denmark, and given the task of cheering up Hamlet. When this fails, and the King realizes that Hamlet is a threat to his life, the two men are given the task of sending Hamlet to his death. Hamlet turns the tables on this plot and has Rosencrantz and Guildenstern killed instead.
"This captivating blend of solemn soul-searching and slapstick comedy results in a night that spans the spectrum of human emotion, keeping the audience laughing throughout much of the play," says The Washington Post.
The play is presented by the School of the Arts' Department of Theatre in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University, with additional support from the Palm Beach County Cultural Council, the Palm Beach Post and WXEL. Tickets are available by calling 561-297-3737 or by visiting ucboxoffice@fau.edu. They will also be available at the theatre two hours prior to performance. For more information about the play, call 561-297-3810. For more information on other School of the Arts events, call Arts Update at 561-297-2977 or visit www.fau.edu/artsupdate.
