Mathew Forbes Romer Foundation FAU Scholarship Recipients BOCA RATON, FL (January 28, 2004) Florida Atlantic Universitys Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing announced Sandra Burke, Souroushan Khademi and Christina Virzi as recipients of a Mathew Forbes Romer Foundation Scholarship. The emphasis of these scholarships is to promote critical nursing care for children with genetic disorders. Burke is a senior nursing student, who worked as a firefighter/paramedic before attending FAU. During her pediatric rotation, she was assigned to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Her experiences with children who have genetic disorders have given her an understanding that there are no limitations on human life. She plans to pursue a masters degree after graduation in nursing. Khademi is a junior nursing student pursing a second bachelors degree. She has already earned a degree in Behavioral Neuroscience/Psychobiology from FAU. Khademi is interested in working with children who suffer from various types of learning disabilities and genetic disorders. She is also interested in studying brain functions and its effects on behavior. Virzi is a junior nursing student, who also has a bachelors degree in psychology and a masters in marriage and family therapy from Nova Southeastern. She currently works as a family counselor at the Lippman Youth Shelter for children aged 13 to 17, while she is studying for her bachelors degree. The scholarships generated from the Mathew Forbes Romer Foundation are helping to support several of our students who will make a difference in the lives of children they are privileged to nurse especially those with genetic disorders, said Dr. Anne Boykin, dean of FAUs Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. We are very pleased to support the goals of this Foundation through education and eventually nursing research.
