FAU Hosts Lecture on "How Babies Learn About the World Around Them"
David J. Lewkowicz Participates in Frontiers in Science Lecture Series
BOCA RATON, FL (October 14, 2003) - Infants are born into a world of incredible sensory complexity. They see, hear, feel, taste and smell right from birth but, unlike adults, do not initially understand the meaning inherent in their sensory experiences. David Lewkowicz, professor of psychology from Florida Atlantic University, will speak on the topic of "How Babies Learn About the World Around Them" during the second lecture of the series on Thursday, October 23 at 4 p.m. in room 126 of the Charles E. Schmidt Biomedical Science Center on Florida Atlantic University's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Lewkowicz's lecture will show how researchers "peek" into the baby's developing mind to find out what they know and how they know it. In addition, he will present the results from various studies demonstrating that sensory and perceptual abilities evolve quickly during the first year of life, that infants rely on these abilities to acquire basic information about their world and that infants build on that information to achieve an initial cognitive representation of their external world.
Lewkowicz is a professor of pyschology at Florida Atlantic University. He received his Ph.D. from City University of New York.
This lecture is the second in a three-part Frontiers in Science lecture series. For more information on the lecture series, contact Joan Gove at 561-297-2954.
