Series of Events to Launch FAU's School of the Arts
BOCA RATON, FL (Aug. 27, 2003) - Florida Atlantic University's Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters is introducing its School of the Arts with a series of inaugural events at the Schmidt Performing Arts Center on the Boca Raton campus.
The first event will be an opening night reception and private viewing of the Biennial Faculty Art Exhibition on Friday, September 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Schmidt Center Gallery. The viewing and guided tour will be given by Rod Faulds, University Galleries director and faculty artists, including Department of Art Chair Angel DiCosola. The exhibition features pieces from award-winning art faculty in the media of painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, printmaking, graphic design and video art.
The theatre department will host the second event with the presentation of Peter Weiss' play "The Investigation," followed by a Talkback Panel Discussion with Department of Theatre Chair Jean-Louis Baldet, faculty from FAU's Holocaust and Judaic Studies program and members of the cast. The play and panel discussion will take place on Sunday, November 16 at 2 p.m. in the Studio One Theatre.
"The Investigation" deals with the atrocities of the Third Reich. Playwright Peter Weiss takes the audience into the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials of the 1960s. He uses the actual testimony of Auschwitz survivors as well as his firsthand experience attending the trials to explore the determination and strength of humanity during its darkest times.
The final event in the series is a President's reception and concert that will kick off the FAU Latin Music Festival, a two-day festival at FAU's Boca Raton and Ft. Lauderdale campuses. The President's reception will take place Saturday, February 28 at 6 p.m. in the University Theatre. The concert following the reception will be a piano gala featuring Latin performances and other music by internationally acclaimed pianists Heather Coltman, Irena Kofman, Leonid Treer, Anne Louis-Turgeon and Edward Turgeon. There will also be vocal student performances from "Zarzuelas" directed by Patricia Fleitas.
