FAU Regional Training Center for Fulbright Scholars

BOCA RATON, FL (July 28, 2003) - Florida Atlantic University is the regional training center for the Fulbright Program, America's flagship international educational exchange program. In this capacity, FAU will again host the Fall Southeast Regional Workshop for Fulbright exchange teachers. Educators from over a dozen nations will attend.

FAU provides orientation programs twice yearly for U.S. Fulbright Scholars from universities located throughout the southeastern United States who are going abroad and for foreign Fulbright Scholars who are coming to universities in the southeast region of the United States.

"This is both an honor and a responsibility," said FAU President Frank Brogan. "This program expands FAU's faculty and student exchange relationships with other educational institutions around the world. Being the regional training center establishes a working partnership between FAU and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department, which sponsors the Fulbright Program."

Created in 1946 under federal legislation introduced by the late U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program has the goal of fostering understanding between the American people and others around the world.

Over the past 57 years, nearly a quarter-million individuals, including about 91,000 Americans, have studied, taught and researched in countries other than their own under Fulbright grants. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and leadership ability.

Dr. William Nicoll of the College of Education will serve as the Fulbright Training Program coordinator. The program will be directed by Dr. Ray Holland, dean of Open University and Continuing Education at FAU.
