FAU's Eyeglass Drive Has Crystal Clear Rewards
BOCA RATON, FL (June 27, 2003) - The Florida Atlantic University chapter of the American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA), in partnership with the Lions Club of Boca Raton, has completed the 10th annual eyeglass drive, with more than 450 pairs of new, used and broken glasses being donated for people in need. The Lions Club will refurbish the glasses and distribute them throughout the United States to underprivileged individuals who cannot afford eyeglasses.
Dr. Dennis Palkon, professor of health administration at FAU and faculty advisor of the program, says that the ACHCA students have learned the value of giving back to the community and helping those in need. "The students have discovered that volunteering can be fun and fruitful for all involved," said Dr. Palkon. "By providing glasses to individuals who would otherwise have to do without, the students learn they can make a difference in people's lives."
To date, FAU students and alumni have collected more than 9,000 pairs of eyeglasses. Lions Clubs throughout the United States participate in the drive as well.
