FAU Professor Hosts Truman Legacy Symposium Focusing On National Security
BOCA RATON, FL (May 21, 2003) - This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Truman presidency. In honor of this historic occasion, a Truman Legacy Symposium will be held at the Harry S. Truman Little White House in Key West on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14.
The two-day event, convened by Dr. Robert Watson, who teaches political science at Florida Atlantic University, will host some of the nation's foremost national security experts who will assess Truman's legacy and the current state of national security. Event guests will include General Brent Scowcroft, former National Security Advisor to Presidents Ford and Bush; George Elsey, Ken Hechler and Milton P. Kayle, former senior aides to President Truman, and a number of national security scholars.
"Perhaps no other president had such a lasting impact on U.S. foreign relations and national security policy than Harry Truman," said Watson. "The concept of U.S. national security and international collective security, with the establishment of systems like the UN and NATO, was established during Truman's presidency. It is fascinating that on the golden anniversary of the end of Truman's presidency, perhaps no issue is as critical on a worldwide scale as national security."
The program begins on Friday, June 13 with a VIP tour of the Little White House and a reception/dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. The evening will feature remarks from Truman's grandson and former secretary, as well as Truman impersonator and historian, Neil Johnson. The cost is $25 for the general public. Admission for students and military is $20.
On Saturday, June 14, the program will take place at the Tennessee Williams Theater on the campus of Florida Keys Community College from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Highlights include a keynote address by General Brent Scowcroft, a roundtable discussion with three former senior aides to President Truman and presentations by leading national security experts with the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy and National Defense University. The cost is $25 for the general public. Admission for students and military is $20.
