FAU Foundation Board Elects New Chair and Members

BOCA RATON, FL (May 15, 2003) --
The Florida Atlantic University Foundation elected Boca Raton businessman and philanthropist Herbert Gimelstob as its new chair. The Foundation also elected three new members and ratified the appointment of two others during the organization's annual meeting today.

With a long history of support and philanthropy with FAU, Gimelstob, with his wife Elaine, was the lead donor for the Herbert and Elaine Gimelstob Eminent Scholar Chair in Judaic Studies and also provided the lead gift for a $1 million building on the Boca Raton Campus which will house educational and outreach programs in support of the University's growing Judaic Studies programs. In 2002 the Gimelstobs established an endowed scholarship in Judaic Studies.

Other members of the 2003-2004 FAU Foundation Executive Committee include: Betty S. Zinman, vice chair; Christopher Wheeler, secretary; Ramon Rodriguez '71, treasurer; Virginia Miller, Board of Trustee liaison; Howard Guggenheim, immediate past president; Frank Brogan, '81 FAU president; David W. Lowe, interim executive director; Richard H. Davimos, CFP, at large; Frederick Miller, MD, MHA, MBA, at large; Willard B. Soper, Major Gift Committee chair; Mary Sue Donohue, Planned Gifts Committee chair; William E. Morris, Real Estate Committee chair; Barbara Schmidt, Nominating Committee chair and Casey Gunnell, Investment Committee chair.

Newly elected members of the FAU Board of Directors are:

Jacqueline L. Becker, who with her husband, retiring FAU Foundation Board member Herman Becker, has been a supporter of FAU for many years specifically through the Jacqueline L. Becker Award in Political Science, which has been awarded annually for the past 18 years to an FAU student who has excelled in both the study of politics and community activism. The current holder of the scholarship is Gearoid Millar, a senior from Vero Beach. Becker, an expert in grassroots politics at the state and national levels, is the founder of the organization known as HELP, Housewives' Effort for Local Progress.

Stuart Z. Grossman is a founding partner in the law firm of Grossman and Roth, P.A. A graduate from the University of Miami, Grossman was named Trial Lawyer of the Year in 1995 by the Florida group of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He has served on the group's national Board of Directors. Grossman is a contributing donor to the Herbert and Elaine Gimelstob Eminent Scholar Chair in Judaic Studies at FAU.

Virginia I. Miller is a member of FAU's Board of Trustees and director of community relations for Miller Construction Co. A 30-year resident of Broward County, Miller has served on various boards of community organizations including the Broward Child Welfare Initiative, the President's Council of Broward Community College and the Broward Education Foundation among others. Miller is an active member of FAU's Broward Community Advisory Board and was on the inaugural board of the FAU College of Nursing Advisory Board.

Newly appointed members to the Board are Alene Brewer, president of the University Club, a volunteer organization that supports FAU projects and FAU Student Government President Ancel Pratt III. William French, an FAU Foundation member since 1986, has been elected to Emeritus Status. French has served the Foundation as president, treasurer and served on the executive committee since 1995.

The 15-member executive committee, oversees the operations of the full 56-member Foundation, which is the University's private fund raising organization. With total assets of more than $156 million, the Foundation was created as a non-profit corporation to accept and manage private funds in support of Florida Atlantic University and its programs.

Dr. Robert Watson, an expert in American Politics, is the founding editor of the journal White House Studies. In addition, he frequently serves as a media commentator on several national television networks and in newspapers.
