FAU Hosts Symposium On Foreign Policy
Boca Raton, FL (April 3, 2003) - Florida Atlantic University will host a symposium highlighting Asian foreign policy on Saturday, April 12 at the Ft. Lauderdale campus of FAU, 111 East Las Olas Boulevard, Room 724.
This year's symposium is themed "China, Taiwan, and the United States: Prospects for Peace and Confrontation ". Panelists will discuss a range of topics, including the political, economic, military and foreign policy implications for the United States, China, Taiwan and other Asian States.
"While world attention is now clearly focused on the war with Iraq, and the application of the new Bush foreign policy in the Middle East, it is unclear at this time what the implications of this policy are for the global War on Terrorism and other dangerous conflicts in Asia with North Korea, China and Taiwan," said Dr. Ed Schwerin, professor of political science at FAU.
The current political situation between China and Taiwan has stimulated vigorous political, economic, and philosophical debate. This situation will be discussed and considered by four leading Asian scholars, from the Taiwanese, Chinese and U.S. perspectives. In addition, the speakers will engage in a roundtable discussion focusing on policies, strategies and probable future scenarios for peace or confrontation in Asia.
FAU will host a number of distinguished speakers at this year's symposium. Speakers include: Dr. June Dreyer, University of Miami; Dr. Shiping Hua, University of Louisville; Dr. Alexander Tan, University of Northern Texas; and Dr. Dennis Hickey, Southwest Missouri State University.
The full day symposium will run from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. A reception will immediately follow. Attendance is free. Refreshments and lunch are free on a first-come first-served basis. Please call to reserve your space at the conference. For more information on the event or to RSVP, call 954/236-1132.
