FAU TO HOST CRISTINA GARCIA AND THANE ROSENBAUM
BOCA RATON, FL (April 1, 2003) Authors Cristina Garcia and Thane Rosenbaum will read from their novels on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn at Boca Raton Town Center at 1950 Glades Road in Boca Raton. The presentations are part of the MELUS (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the United States) conference hosted by the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University. The readings and book signings are free and open to the public.
Garcias debut novel Dreaming in Cuban chronicles the irrevocable effects of the Cuban revolution on three generations of Cuban women. It explores the problems of dual cultural identity, a topic close to the hearts of millions of Americans. Her second novel The Aguero Sisters continues this theme.
Garcia was born in Havana, raised in New York and attended Columbia University. Prior to becoming a novelist she worked as a political journalist, serving as bureau chief for Time magazine for Florida and the Caribbean. She has been a Guggenheim Fellow, a fellow at Princeton University, and is the recipient of the Whiting Writers Award.
Thane Rosenbaums post-Holocaust trilogy of novels include Second Hand Smoke, Elijah Visible and his most recent novel, The Golems of Gotham. As a child of Holocaust survivors, Rosenbaum writes about what living in the second generation entails, both emotionally and spiritually. He addresses the fragmentation of the Jewish family and his generations weak identification with their faith.
Rosenbaum writes essays and reviews for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Los Angeles Times.
