Music of Holocaust and Exile at FAU
Performances by soprano Diane McNaron and FAU’s Trio Amadé

BOCA RATON, FL (March 24, 2003) --
Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present a concert featuring music written about the tragedy of the Holocaust as well as music that reflects the losses experienced by those exiled from their homes by Nazi persecution, on Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m., in the Schmidt Center Gallery on the Boca Raton campus.

The concert will include “Going Back, Trio for Clarinet, Soprano and Piano,” by Allen Gimbel; “Trio in E Minor, Op. 67” for Violin, Cello and Piano, by Dimitri Shostakovich; “Sonata for Flute and Piano,” by Erwin Schulhoff; and “Und Ich Werde Nicht Mehr Sehen,” by Hanns Eisler (with poetry by Bertolt Brecht).

Heather Coltman, D.M.D., chair of the department of music, will direct the concert. Performers include Paul Green, playing clarinet; Bryce Seliger, playing flute; and members of FAU’s ensemble-in-residence Trio Amadé. These include pianist Heather Coltman, violinist Felicia Moye and cellist Emilio Colón.

There will also be a guest appearance by soprano Diane McNaron, who has appeared in the media of opera, cabaret, oratorio and recital worldwide. In 2000, McNaron recorded and released the CD "Music in Flight," which contains songs of exile by Hanns Eisler and others. McNaron was formerly the head of the vocal school at the University of Adelaide in Australia. She currently lives and teaches in Birmingham, Alabama.

The concert is being given in conjunction with the Arie A. Galles Holocaust exhibition at FAU, which is on display in the Schmidt Center Gallery. Working over a decade, Galles created a set of black and white charcoal drawings that were inspired by aerial views of the Nazi concentration camps. He has paired the images with poetry by award-winning poet Jerome Rothenberg.

Tickets for the concert are $10 and FAU students are admitted free with a valid ID. The Boca Raton campus of FAU is located at 777 Glades Road in Boca Raton. For further information, call FAU’s music department at 561-297-3750 or the box office at 561-297-3737.
