FAU TO HOST FRONTIERS IN SCIENCE LECTURE SERIES
Gene Therapy Expert Dr. Darwin J. Prockop To Speak Feb. 13

BOCA RATON, FL (Feb. 5, 2003) -- Five world-renowned scientists will participate in Florida Atlantic University's Frontiers in Science lecture series during the spring semester. Presented by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, with support from the FAU Lifelong Learning Society, the free public lectures will be held in Room 126 of the Charles E. Schmidt Biomedical Science Center on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.

"These internationally respected scholars have been invited by members of the FAU science faculty to enliven and enrich the intellectual and academic life of the university and its regional partners in science," said Dr. Nathan Dean, dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.

Dr. Darwin J. Prockop, director of the Center for Gene Therapy at Tulane University, will present the first lecture in the series on Thursday, February 13, at 4 p.m. Dr. Prockop will discuss, “Characterization and Potential Uses of Adult Stem Cells for Cell and Gene Therapy.” Other lectures in FAU's Frontiers in Science series include:

Thursday, February 27, 4 p.m. – Dr. Mriganka Sur, Sherman Fairchild Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will discuss, “How the Brain Wires Itself.”

Thursday, March 13, 4 p.m. – Dr. Terrie M. Williams, professor of biology in the Center for Ocean Health at the University of California, will speak on, “The Killer Appetites: How Large, Hungry Predators Shape the Oceans.”

Thursday, March 27, 4 p.m. – Dr. B.L. Turner II, Milton P. and Alice C. Higgins Professor of Environment and Society Graduate School of Geography at Clark University will speak on, “Integrated Environmental Science and the Southern Yucatan Peninsula.”

Thursday, April 10, 4 p.m. – Dr. Warner A. Miller, chair and professor of physics at FAU will discuss, “Closing in on a Black Hole.”
