BOCA RATON, FL (November 1, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University’s department of theatre   will present the world premier of “Hunting the Basilisk,” a drama by University of Central Florida Professor John Shafer from Friday, November 10 through Sunday, November 19.   Shows begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and 2 p.m. on Sundays in the Studio One Theatre of FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.   General admission tickets are $20.   FAU faculty, staff and alumni tickets are $10, and students may obtain tickets free at the door or ahead of time with a $5 reservation fee.   Tickets can be purchased and student reservations made by calling 800-564-9539 or at the theatre two hours prior to the performance.

The play, which will be directed by Nanique Gheridian, managing artistic director of Palm Beach Dramaworks Studio Theatre, is about four “powerful and entertaining women” from different periods of history who meet in the afterlife.   These women include Madame Le Brun, an artist who lived in Paris in the 18 th century and spent most of her time painting pictures of herself; Eulalie McCarty, an African/American woman who inherited an estate in Louisiana before the Civil War; Sargeant Sims, a composite figure based on hundreds of female veterans who fought in the Civil War; and Alice Allbright, a contemporary successful attorney.

The play has had two public readings in Florida, but this is the first full-scale production.   It is presented by the School of the Arts’ department of theatre in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at FAU.   For more information on other School of the Arts events, visit www.fau.edu/artsandlettersnews or call 561-297-2977.
