FAU Libraries Host Debate on Second Amendment Right to Bear Arms

BOCA RATON, FL (September 10, 2008) - Florida Atlantic University Libraries and the department of political science will observe Constitution Day on Wednesday, September 17, at 2 p.m., with a stirring debate on an individual’s Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms.”  The event will be held on the plaza of FAU’s S.E. Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus, but will be moved inside of the library if it rains.

The goal of the debate’s controversial topic is to encourage critical inquiry and interest in Constitutional issues among students. Dr. Kevin Wagner, assistant professor of political science, will moderate the event. Dr. Marshall DeRosa, professor of political science, will defend the Constitutional right of an individual to bear arms. Dr. Timothy Lenz, professor of political science, will defend an alternative interpretation of the Second Amendment.  FAU student Matt Mesang, who is part of a national gun advocacy group, will join the debate. 

Constitution Day recognizes the ratification of the U. S. Constitution.  It is observed on September 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787.
