FAU Creates Ninth College
BOCA RATON, FL (Aug. 16, 2006) -- Florida Atlantic
University has developed a ninth college the Charles E. Schmidt
College of Biomedical Science. The new entity, which received Board
of Trustees approval today, will house the existing biomedical
science faculty in two departments, the Department of Basic
Biomedical Science and the Department of Clinical Science, which
will support the medical education program of the University of
Miami Miller School of Medicine at FAU.
"As FAU further strengthens its biomedical research focus and fully
develops the new four year UMMSM regional campus, the development
of the new College provides us with the infrastructure needed to
become a major academic health science center," said Michael
Friedland, vice president of medical programs and new dean of the
Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science.
The new structure takes certain academic units and infrastructure
originally housed in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and
provides a new construct that allows the University to better
manage the medical education program and provide greater emphasis
on the field of biomedical science. Also, the new College
faculty and staff will develop a Continuing Medical Education
program for community-based physicians in association with the
UMMSM.
"The many fields of science continue to expand each and every day," said Gary Perry, dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science " This move allows the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science to increase its focus on both instruction and research in traditional science and mathematics."
