FAU Dedicates Markowitz Medical Student Lounge

BOCA RATON, FL (April 25, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University hosted a dedication ceremony to unveil the Cindy and Stuart Markowitz Medical Student Lounge.     The event, held in the lobby of the Charles E. Schmidt Biomedical Science Center, brought nearly 100 people to FAU’s Boca Raton campus for a special afternoon that included remarks by FAU President Frank T. Brogan ’81, Dr. Michael Friedland, professor of biomedical science and vice president of medical programs, Dr.Dwight Warren, professor and vice dean of Biomedical Science, and medical student Gia Marotta.   Dr. Ira J. Gelb, clinical professor of biomedical science, director of clinical programs, director of simulator programs and a member of the FAU Foundation Board of Directors, was also on the program.  The program ended with refreshments and a tour of the four-story Biomedical Center that is the home to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University.

The event honored Dr. and Mrs. Stuart Markowitz, whose generosity has created the Cindy and Stuart Markowitz, M.D., Endowed Fund for Biomedical Science Programming.   Their gift of $75,000, which is eligible for a state match, will fund programming and activities for the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and its department of biomedical science, with particular emphasis on supporting the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University.  A lounge designed for medical students in the building’s lobby has been named in the couple’s honor.  An additional gift of $50,000 was made to the Markowitz fund by the MBNA Foundation.   With this gift, the total value of the endowment is $125,000.

Markowitz, a professor at Case Western Reserve University College of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, is an emeritus senior partner of Drs. Markowitz, Rosenberg Stein and Association, the largest multispecialty medical group in Cleveland. Earning his medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine, Markowitz completed his internship and residency at Mt. Sinai Medical Center of Cleveland. After retiring from his practice of internal medicine, Markowitz moved to South Florida and began a new career in academia.   He is currently director of clinical skills and assistant dean for medical student affairs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University.
