FAU’s Chamber Soloists Present “Roots of Classical Music”

            BOCA RATON, FL (February 28, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University’s Chamber Soloists present the “Roots of Classical Music: Armenian Rhapsody” in two concerts.   The first concert will be held on Saturday, March 18 beginning at 2 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Auditorium on FAU’s Davie Campus, 2912 College Avenue.   There will be a repeat performance on Sunday, March 19 beginning at 3 p.m. in the University Theatre on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.   General admission is $15 with group discounts available.   FAU students, faculty, staff and alumni may obtain free admission with ID.   The concerts will include music by several Armenian composers including Arno Babajanian, Domitas Vartabed and Aram Khachaturian.  

The performance by the Chamber Soloists will feature Mei Mei Luo on violin, Ian Maksin on cello, Richard Hancock on clarinet and Leonid Treer on piano.   Student pianists will include Laura Bomeny, Jonathan Li, Gabriela Wagner-Maloomian and Ani Kambur.   Luo was formerly with the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, where she served as assistant concertmaster.    She has also played with the Miami Chamber Symphony, the Florida Grand Opera and the Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphonia.   Maksin, who has been described by critics as “one of the most passionate and versatile [cello] players of the new generation,” has performed worldwide.   He was a member of the New World Symphony from 2000 to 2003, and has performed with many classical and experimental projects since then.   Hancock has served as principal clarinet of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and Florida Grand Opera since 1984.   Before that, he played in many orchestras worldwide.   Treer, as part of the FAU Chamber Soloists, has developed a loyal following in South Florida.   His performing career before coming to FAU included appearances with prominent ensembles such as the Lark, Biava, Audubon and Alexander Quartets.   Treer has also given concerts and taught master classes at two of the world’s most prestigious music conservatories, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.
