With a launch targeted for June 8 , NASA's next shuttle mission, STS-117, will include FAU graduate and mission specialist Steve Swanson (at right). The mission's chief duty will be the delivery of materials needed to continue building the International Space Station. Swanson will take a flag to space that will later be presented to FAU. He earned a master's degree in computer systems in 1986 and was selected as an astronaut in 1998. Find out more at the shuttle mission webpage.
FAU students borrowed less to attend classes during the 2006-07 academic year, due in part to three new grant programs.
During the first year of the Federal Smart, ACG and Florida First Generation Matching Grant programs, $1.7 million was contributed directly to FAU students. This helped lower the number of Federal Stafford/PLUS loan borrowers by 5 percent.
Also in place for the 2007-08 year will be the new “Welcome to FAU” scholarship program which provides $1,000 awards to 50 entering students to assist with tuition, books and supplies.
“For many years we have seen significant growth in student indebtedness as grants gave way to loans, especially at the federal level,” said Dr. Michael Armstrong, associate provost of FAU. “The advent of these three programs, especially the First Generation Matching Grant program in Florida, has started a turn in a new direction and all of us at FAU are very pleased to see lower levels of student debt.”

The FAU Foundation has elected Leslie M. Corley as the board’s new chair, and Dr. Kenneth Jessell, FAU’s vice president of financial affairs, was appointed to serve as the Foundation’s interim executive director. A member of the Foundation board since 1999, Corley is chairman and president of LM Capital Corporation and LM Capital Securities, Inc., an investment management firm. MORE...
President Brogan has been named vice president of the Sun Belt Conference’s Executive Committee. “It is truly a privilege to serve as the vice president of the Sun Belt Conference Executive Committee,” he said. “I look forward to working with the other members of the committee during what will undoubtedly be an exciting year in athletics.”
As part of the eight-person committee, which provides oversight for the Sun Belt Conference, Brogan’s shared responsibilities will include approving conference-wide rules/legislation, the conference office budget, tournament championship sites, and other duties. Because of its status as a member of the Division I-A football coalition, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 17-member board of directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines.
Most FAU athletic teams have just completed their first year of competition in the Sun Belt, football and swimming having joined the conference previously. Men's soccer plays in the Atlantic Soccer Conference.

Six protégés received scholarships of $500 each during a ceremony hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs Connection Mentoring Program earlier this spring. Dr. Charles Brown (above), vice president for student affairs, spoke to mentors and protégés on the concept of mentoring. The event also featured a musical tribute to mentoring by Sandy Lexine of the FAU Gospel Choir, and a presentation by Yarlie Nicolas (right), a protégé in the program, on what she learned from the mentoring experience. Mentors and protégés also received certificates to recognize their participation in the program. The scholarships were sponsored by the FAU Foundation. |

The Career Development Center, part of Student Affairs, has jointly hired, with the College of Engineering and Computer Science, a Career Development Center Engineering Liaison. As the first person to hold this position, Nicole Wilson will oversee the Engineering Co-operative (Co-op) and Internship program for the college. She will also offer job search assistance and provide seamless access to all of the services offered in the center for students in the college.
The center has also hired Dawn Howard as associate director of employer relations and Dan Partouche as assistant director. Howard will manage the University Co-operative (Co-op) Education and Internship Program. She comes to FAU with more than eight years of human resources experience and most recently served as an advisor/counselor at Broward Community College. Partouche will provide career development services for FAU’s graduate students, serve as liaison to Graduate Studies and the Graduate Students Association and oversee Professional/ Graduate School Information Day held every fall semester. All three new employees bring a wealth of experience and are welcome additions to the department.
Director Sandra Jakubow and James Watson, coordinator for employer relations, attended the 19th annual statewide job fair held at UCF on May 10. More than 250 organizations recruited for full-time, part-time, co-op and internship career opportunities. This annual event is sponsored by the Florida Career Centers, representing Florida’s 10 state universities.
The John D. MacArthur Campus Library Gallery is extending a call to artists for its annual “Sunshine Shorts: An All Florida Film Festival,” which will be held in October on the Jupiter campus.
The juried festival is open to all Florida film, video and conceptual artists, including students of all ages. The Viewer’s Choice Award, the Juror’s Choice Award and the FAU Outstanding Student Award will be given. Students must identify their schools.
Projects must be 10 minutes or less in length. Deadline for submission is Aug. 25. Entries received after that will be held for next year. There are no application or entry fees.
Send a copy of your DVD in National Television System Committee (NTSC) format with one to three sentences that can be used for the Web, the running time of your project and your mailing address to John D.
