| Dr. Jaap Vos, associate professor and chair of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, welcomes attendees to the presentation. |
Earlier this year, the Broward Design Collaborative at the College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs offered a demonstration of how planning and architecture students using new software tools can help everyone view Fort Lauderdale in unprecedented ways.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, the Visual Planning Technology Lab and the School of Architecture combined the power of surface modeling tools (using SketchUp) with the visual planning and database tools of GIS software (using ArcGIS) and linked them to create a dynamic virtual model of the city in four dimensions.
Students presented a detailed visual and information model of a nine-block section of Fort Lauderdale’s downtown as it was in 1928 and as it is projected to be in 2008. The objective was to demonstrate the possibilities of this new collaborative field and cutting-edge technology at the intersection of form, space and time in the urban context.
