Public Records Requests
Within Florida Statutes, Chapter 119, the "Public Records Law" creates a right of access to records made or received in connection with official business of a public body. As a Florida public university, Florida Atlantic University is subject to Florida Public Records laws.
A public record is any record created or received in connection with the transaction of official business, which is used to perpetuate, communicate or formalize knowledge, unless specifically exempted. A public record is not limited to traditional written documents. Examples of public records include documents, e-mails, papers, letters, maps, books, tapes, photographs, film, sound recordings, data processing software or other material, regardless of physical form or means of transmission.
Some FAU records are exempt from public disclosure due to statutory exemptions. Examples of exemptions include student education records, certain records relating to faculty tenure applications, certain investigative records during an investigation, certain confidential trade secret or proprietary information, and records of FAU’s direct-support organizations (e.g., the FAU Foundation, Inc.)
Records may be released if required by the Florida Public Records laws or in accordance with our policies or regulations and must be saved for a designated period of time to comply with Florida’s record retention policies.
FAU’s department of media relations handles the processing of all public records requests for FAU. If you receive a public records request or would like any further information, call 561-297-3020 or e-mail mediarelations@fau.edu.
