Meet your new 2012-2013 SOWSA officers!
Cristina Porro is starting Advanced Standing Master’s program in Social Work at Florida Atlantic University. She received her BSW from Florida Atlantic University this past spring and is excited to continue pursuing her educational and professional goals. Her concentration is with adults and families and she will be interning at Palm Beach State College Counseling Center. She is very excited to serve as President for SOWSA, the Social Work Student Association, and is looking forward to getting our Social Work students involved for a productive 2012-2013 academic year.
Georgieann Neil is a senior at the Florida Atlantic University, who will be graduating in May 2013, with her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work along with a Certificate in Aging. In the fall of 2013 she will be continuing her education by pursuing her Master’s at Florida Atlantic University in their Advance Standing Degree Program in Social Work. Georgieann is a very passionate individual who aims to work with the elderly population. She hopes to continue on her educational and professional career by becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and gaining a Doctoral Degree in Social Work. She looks forward to operating her own practice someday. She currently volunteers at the Veterans Affair in Broward County and interns at The Volen Center of Boca Raton. Georgieann is excited and honored to serve as the Vice President of SOWSA for 2012-2013 school year.
Megan Hamerdinger is a MSW student at FAU. She completed her Bachelor's in Social Work at Florida Atlantic University in May 2012 with a minor in Spanish. She is currently working at POST, Inc. (Pediatric Oncology Support Team) in West Palm Beach, which serves children with cancer and their families. She loves her job and knows that Social Work was the right choice for her. She is hoping to do more with medical social work and with Pediatric Oncology throughout her career. She is excited about being the Vice President of SOWSA for the 2012-2013 school year. She was previously the Event Chair for 2 years of Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society fundraising event.
Jill Janok graduated from the University of Florida with a BS in Family, Youth and Community Sciences. After completing her undergraduate degree, Jill worked for Vocational Rehabilitation as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and then as a Supervisor. Jill began her MSW at Florida Atlantic University as a part time student in 2010. Jill is now entering into her concentration year as a full time student. Jill will be completing her internship at Catholic Charities, where she will be working with adults and families. She is very excited to serve as the Secretary of SOWSA for the 2012-2013 academic year. She hopes to expand the student organization through social and professional activities.
Barbara Alcena is a senior seeking her Bachelor's Degree in Social Work at Florida Atlantic University. She first showed interest in social work as a former ward of the state of Florida during her teenage years. She has a passion for advocacy, and ensuring that policies are respected and implemented wherever needed. Child Welfare is her motive for becoming a social worker, as well as Substance Abuse. She has recenty been appointed by Secretary David Wilkins to serve on the Independent Living Services Advisory Council for a two year term. Despite her social services' interests she maintained an involved lifestyle on campus. Her freshman year, she served as a House of Representative in the Boca Raton campus of Student Government. She is a proud member of Konbit Kreyol and Alpha Kappa Psi Co-Ed Professional Business Fraternity and has served on both executive boards. Barbara is honored to be serving asTreasurer for the Social Work Student Association; and looks forward to a successful school year.

Welcome returning students and new students back to school! SOWSA is the School of Social Work student organization responsible for many events that promote the mission statements. Membership provides BSW and MSW students an arena to become active members among the student body and the community. As future Social Workers, service is a major component to the working profession. SOWSA is dedicated to:
- Furthering academic excellence within the BSW and MSW program of the FAU School of Social Work,
- Giving social support to the undergraduate and graduate social work student body,
- Promoting the NASW Code of Ethics by example,
- Increasing the understanding of the Social Work profession as well as promoting a positive image of Social Work as a profession, and
- Providing members with a forum to foster advocacy for social change at university and community levels.
