Sallie Mae Fund Scholarships for Students who are African American, Low Income, or Children of the Victims of the 911 Terrorist Attacks

Earlier this week CSWE Executive Director Julia Watkins and Office of Social Work Accreditation Director Dean Pierce met with Sallie Mae Fund President Kathleen deLaski to talk about funding for social work students. At the meeting they learned about four funding resources for undergraduate students sponsored by Project Access, Sallie Mae’s community-based initiative to help students and families afford the cost of higher education and ensure funding is not a barrier to access.

The ‘Sallie Mae Fund’s First in My Family’ scholarship program for Latino undergraduate students was detailed in a previous email.

The ‘Sallie Mae Fund American Dream’ scholarship program is for African American undergraduate students with financial need. The scholarship was established in partnership with the United Negro College Fund, Inc. (UNCF). Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.

Eligible Students must: be a US citizen; be of African-American descent; demonstrate financial need; be a high school senior or graduate planning to enroll or a student already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited postsecondary institution; and, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale). Applications are due April 15, 2005.

The ‘Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need’ scholarship program is for undergraduate students from low-income families who struggle to pay the difference between the cost of college and their financial aid package. This scholarship is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a department of Scholarship America. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,800 and will be made payable to the school on behalf of the student and are intended to supplement, rather than substitute for, aid received from an institution.

Eligible students must: be a US citizen; have a family adjusted gross income for calendar year 2004 of $30,000 or less; demonstrate unmet financial need of at least $1,000 after the financial aid award package has been determined; be a high school senior or graduate planning to enroll or a student already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited postsecondary institution; and have a cumulative GPA between 2.5 and 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or GED average test score between 42 and 52. The ‘Sallie Mae 911 Education Fund’ scholarship program is for children of parents who were killed or permanently disabled in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Eligible students must: be children of parents who were killed or permanently disabled as a result of the terrorist attacks; and be enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at approved accredited institutions. Scholarship awards are available up to $2,500 per applicant per school year and may be renewed on an annual academic basis subject to satisfactory academic progress. The application deadline is open.
