GALs Needed
Every day, abused, neglected and abandoned children in our community are removed from their homes and placed in foster care because their parents cannot or will not take care of them. A Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) is a volunteer advocate, specially trained to be a powerful voice for the children’ best interests in court and in the community. Their impact can make a life long difference for a vulnerable child.
- Can you imagine being removed from your home and familiar surroundings, being pried from your community and culture?
- GAL’s represent children from many different races/ethnicities/cultures/religions; ranging from newborn – 18 years old
- Each child deserves to have a GAL and each of us can make this happen. Today we have approximately 330 active GAL volunteers in Broward County. We need 390 more GAL’s in order for each child to be represented. There are approx. 2,400 children appointed to the GAL program. At this time 800 children do not have an active GAL of their own.
In the spirit of social justice, what better way then to help heal one child at a time, by advocating for this child, as we would do for our own children.
What are some of the roles of a GAL:
Information Gatherer: who collects all pertinent information and interviews family, foster parents, teachers and other persons involved in a the child’s life.
Community Advocate: The guardian works with the community partners to ensure that the child is receiving the assistance and support needed to succeed.
Courtroom advocate: Based on the information gathered, the GAL makes independent recommendations to the court and becomes the voice of the child, communicating the best interests of the child to all involved. The court depends on the recommendations of the GAL.
How do you become a GAL:
Call our GAL Recruitment director Drew, and set up an interview. Drew Korenvaes at 954 831-6477 Drew.Korenvaes@Gal.Fl.Gov
Register for a training class - the next one is: March 29th, April 4th and 5th
The training class involves 30 hours of training and 6 hours annually of continuing education provided by the GAL program. There is no previous training or legal background necessary.
Please visit the GAL web site and take the time to watch the video to further understand what being a GAL really means.
