Kate Sheffield is a 2nd year student and a continuing Environmental and Growth Management Fellow. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Politics from Mt. Holyoki in Massachusetts and is assigned to Jaap Vos. Kate is finalizing her manuscript on a planning approach to sustainable development: Towards a new approach to Sustainable Development: Ian McHarg’s Intrinsic Suitability. She presented the first draft of the manuscript at the ACSP Conference in Milwaukee where it was very well received by leading scholars in the field. The revised version will be submitted to the Journal of the American Planning Association. |

Rachel Kalin is a 2nd year student and a Research Assistant in the VPT lab. She has a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs and Asian Studies from Florida State University. She is funded by the NSF grant: Displacement due to Catastrophic Hurricanes: Assessing Potential Magnitude and Implications for Housing and Land Development Policies. She is doing research on displacement caused by hurricane Katrina. |

Kayrat Karmanov is a 2nd year Excellence in Planning Student has a Bachelor’s degree in International Law from Eurasian National University in Astana, Kazachstan. He finished his first year in Urban Planning at Michigan State and transferred to FAU in the fall of 2007. He is assigned to James Carras and is currently doing an inventory of Community Redevelopment Districts to see if it is possible to use funds created through Tax Increment Financing for the provision of affordable housing. The work will result in a “best practices” report. |

Susan Brown is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student from the University of Washington in Seattle and has been assigned to the Department. Susan has a background in archeology and was the perfect candidate to inventory, catalogue and update the CUES library. The new John DeGrove Research Library is now located on the 10th floor of the HEC building in downtown Fort Lauderdale and was officially opened on November 19; however, the library will not be completely functional until May 2008. |

Mohammad Hafizur Rahman Arman is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student with a Civil Engineering degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology and a MBA from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is assigned to Praveen Maghelal and started with an inventory of student published articles in major planning journals. This research is intended to lead to a publication in JPER. He is now working on collecting information regarding land use and transportation in the urban fringe which is intended to lead to a publication in JAPA. |

Sheryll Muriente is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student with an Architecture degree from FAU. She is assigned to Kasama Polakit and is performing research on “Urban Form in Little Haiti”. The goal of this research is to suggest urban design guidelines for place-based context as opposed to generic form-based code which is now in the process to replace land use restriction. The guidelines will also cover the issue of ecological design in response to the locality such as the issue of natural environment, micro-climatic condition, socio-cultural and socio-economic context and quality of public/community space. |

Yoela Chaveco is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student with a degree in Sociology from the University of Havanna, Cuba. She is assigned to Kasama Polakit and is working with Sheryll Muriente on the above described research in Little Haiti. |

David Baron is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student with a degree in Geography from FAU, and is assigned to Ann-Margaret Esnard. He is working on “Hurricane Emergency Management GIS Tools and Processes for University Emergency Operation Centers”. This project creates a manual that brings together GIS (Geographic Information Systems) localized mapping and data with hurricane forecasting software from NOAA and other agencies. |

Andrea Hayes is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student with a Psychology degree from the University of Florida. She has been assigned to David Prosperi and is working on the organization of the two Planning Abroad programs this year. |

Martin Fitts is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi. Martin is assigned to Joyce Levine and is doing research on Urban Growth Boundaries in coastal counties from North Carolina to Texas. Previously, he performed literature searches on social vulnerability to disaster, primarily hurricane vulnerability, and on the unsustainable growth patterns of South Florida since the Growth Management Act in 1985. |

Chris Chagdes is a Research Assistant for Ann-Margaret Esnard and is funded by the NSF grant: Displacement due to Catastrophic Hurricanes: Assessing Potential Magnitude and Implications for Housing and Land Development Policies. He has Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Chris is in charge of gathering census related data and creating GIS maps for the NSF hurricane project. If students have any questions related to GIS or using ArcGIS, Chris is always happy to help. |
