FAPS Plays A Part Helping Kids Get Into College
On August 9 th & 10 th, The Florida Atlantic Planning Society and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning sponsored a College Summit for juniors and seniors involved in the ASPIRA program. ASPIRA of Florida, Inc. is a non-profit organization that has programs in South Miami, Miami, North Miami, Broward, and Palm Beach. ASPIRA works with underprivileged youth and families by providing services centered on leadership development.
This event provided 20 first generation college-bound students with the eye-opening opportunity to look at the real possibilities of attending a four-year college or university.
The students received a warm welcome and some great advice about college success from Dr. Jaap Vos of the FAU Department of Urban and Regional Planning. The FAU Admissions Department led a workshop introducing the students to the admissions process. Throughout both days students went through intense writing sessions to prepare their college essays. The students were also able to access university websites to gather information, and in some cases, apply to schools of their choice.
FAPS provided refreshments for the students and staff so that those involved could replenish the energy expended in studying. FAPS was proud to play a part in helping ASPIRA and help make the event a success.
