Anthony Abbate is a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from Catholic University in Washington DC and a Masters degree in Architecture from Washington University in St Louis. He has also completed professional development courses in design and designing for persons with disabilities at Harvard University.
He established his independent practice of architecture in 1990 after eight years as an associate in the firm of Donald Singer Architect in Fort Lauderdale.
Mr Abbate is the recipient of 17 awards for excellence in design from the American Institute of Architects. Projects include site design, planning, and architectural design for commercial, education, hotel, housing and recreation projects in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Colombia, Turks and Caicos, and South Florida.
He is a Associate Professor at the Florida Atlantic University School of Architecture, Director of the Broward Design Collaborative, President of the Arango Design Foundation, and first vice-chair of the Broward County Cultural Council, and a member of the Downtown Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club. He also taught at Broward Community College, was a visiting critic at Roger Williams College, the University of Florida, the University of Miami, the Dessau Institute of Architecture, and Florida International University. He served the Fort Lauderdale chapter of the AIA as president and state director, and past president of Second Century Broward.

- July 1996: Independent consultant for the Danish not-for-profit organization Naturfolkenes Verden to assist in the project initiation of a school to be developed, built, and run by the Aymara nation of the Tiwanaku region of Bolivia.
