ARC 3320 Architectural Design 5
Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C in all pre-professional design studio courses. Completion of all required lower-division pre-professional and general education course work, and approved portfolio.
Emphasis on the interpretation and analysis of structural expression and its interrelationships with principles of architectural ordering and composition of space. Students will work collaboratively and individually on a project where imposed conditions of an urban site, program, and building system focuses on the interrelated aspects of an urban fabric. Knowledge of the elements of architectural design is developed in the decision-making process. Eight hours of studio per week.

ARC 3321 Architectural Design 6
Prerequisites: ARC3320 with minimum grade of C; ARC3551 and ARC3610, or special permission.
A continuation of the themes in Architectural Design 5 with particular emphasis on integrating conditions of site, climate and environmental systems, circulation, and developing a material presence through the design of a project as an object in an existing architectural and/or natural landscape. Eight hours of studio per week.

ARC 3374 Site Planning & Engineering
Site planning and construction engineering considerations in architectural decision-making. Theories to be applied to studio projects.

ARC 3503 Architectural Structures 2
Structural analysis and design in wood, masonry, and steel with reference to integration of technical systems and architectural design decisions. Through studio consultation, theories are applied to studio projects.

ARC 3610 Environmental Technology 1
Theoretical and practical applications of heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and plumbing systems. Through studio consultation, theories are applied to studio projects.

ARC 3461 Materials & Methods of Construction
An introduction to building materials, their manufacture and assemblies, with emphasis on investigating the theories and practical applications of materials and tectonics to current studio projects. Strong focus on case studies of both contemporary and historical precedents.

ARC 3710 Pre-Modern Architectural History & Theory
Survey of the development of architecture and urban form from the Renaissance through the Industrial Revolution. Particular emphasis is placed on the theoretical aspects of the interrelationships among cultures, architecture, urban form, and technology throughout the world.

ARC 4219 Architectural Theory
Basic philosophical considerations in architecture as manifested in the works and writings of recognized authorities in the field. Recommended readings guide students' assignments.

ARC 4270 Professional Practice 1
Introduction to principles of professional practice, focusing on the historical, ethical, and legal framework of the practice of architecture.

ARC 4326 Architectural Design 7
Prerequisites: ARC3321 with minimum grade of C; ARC3710 and ARC3653.
Applied principles of programming are explored in developing a design process by combining existing buildings with new development in the making of space and form. These issues are investigated collaboratively and individually in a project with a specific, predominant use within a clearly defined architectural context, and in connection to open urban, public space(s). Eight hours of studio per week.

ARC 4327 Architectural Design 8
Prerequisites: ARC4322 with minimum grade of C; ARC3374, and ARC4682. Co-requisite: ARC4712.
The focus of the studio is on contextual sensitivity, integration of environmental control techniques and technology, articulation of the public, private and mediate realms through investigations of a large urban building and its architectural landscape. Eight hours of studio per week.

ARC 4504 Architectural Structures 3
Structural analysis and design in concrete and composite materials with reference to integration of technical systems and architectural design decisions in small, medium, and large buildings. Theories applied - through consultation - to studio projects.

ARC 4620 Environmental Technology 2
Theoretical and practical applications of electric, lighting, and acoustics design. Consultation in studio helps students to include principles in their studio projects.

ARC 4712 Modern Architectural History & Theory
Corequisite: ARC 4323.
Continuation of the study of the development of architecture and urban form from the Industrial Revolution to the present. Particular emphasis is placed on the theoretical aspects of design as revealed in the interrelationships of cultures, architecture, urban development and technology throughout the world.

ARC 4907 Direct Independent Study
Independent study, research, or other project to extend and integrate the student's knowledge, directed and approved by faculty.

ARC 4306 Community Studio
Prerequisites: Admission to the Community Studio requires a minimum grade of C in previous studio course work, and permission of the instructor.
This studio is intended to fulfill the requirements of any 4 credit-hour senior phase, or the first 6 credit-hour thesis phase studio. The Community Studio is an advocacy arm of the School of Architecture where potentials of community design projects are explored, articulated, and eventually realized with strong emphasis on the involvement of community and interdisciplinary groups. Work is individual and collaborative with focused and measurable assignments.

ARC 4930 Special Topics
Study relating to special topics in Architecture, directed and approved by faculty.

ARC 5271 Professional Practice 2
Introduction to cash flow and discounting techniques, project financial analysis, cost allocation, income tax considerations, project economic analysis, and life-cycle costing.

ARC 5272 Professional Practice 3
Introduction to principles of professional office practice, focusing on the economic and business aspects of the practice of architecture.

ARC 5328 Architectural Design 9
Prerequisites: ARC4323 with minimum grade of C; ARC4562.
This studio will revisit themes developed in previous studio work while placing emphasis on the regional urban context and the interrelationships with anthropometrics, site conditions, and integration of circulation, structural and environmental systems. These issues are resolved through the design of a building of modest complexity to allow detailed explorations in design development and materiality. Twelve hours of studio per week.

ARC 5329 Architectural Design 10
Prerequisites: ARC 5325 with minimum grade of C; ARC5910.
This thesis studio is comprised of individual projects selected, developed and completed by each student. The project will demonstrate competent research, a balance of convention and invention, and the fulfillment of the requisites for communicating the design, development and construction of building(s) and site. Twelve hours of studio per week.

ARC 5775 Literature & Criticism in Architecture
Investigations into the ways architecture is encompassed in other art forms and humanities. A critical analysis of the major theoretical positions influencing contemporary architectural thought.

ARC 5907 Direct Independent Study
Independent study, research, or other project to extend and integrate the student's knowledge; directed and approved by faculty.

ARC 5910 Project Research Methods
Research and data gathering, analysis, organization, and evaluation of information and observations of the design process, in preparation for the thesis phase terminal design project.

ARC 5930 Special Topics
