Over 1,200 high school students representing over 43 high schools from Broward, Miami, and Palm Beach competed in the annual Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Regional competition at the FAU Davie campus on Saturday, March 7, 2015.

That Saturday morning, South Florida’s best "math athletes’ – or mathletes -- faced-off in teams and as individuals to be the first to solve algebra, pre-calculus, statistics, geometry and calculus problems and emerge as the top champions by that afternoon.

The best winning schools that day hailed from: American Heritage (Plantation), Cypress Bay, American Heritage (Boca/Delray), Doral Academy and Deerfield Beach.

According to FAU mathematics Professor Markus Schmidmeier, who along with American Heritage High School was one of the organizers of the event, team members met every week to train. FAU has been involved in promoting this annual event since 2002.

“During the afternoon awards ceremony, champion "mathletes" won more than 200 trophies and were celebrated like sports stars,” said Schmidmeier.
