SPECIFIC PROCEDURES FOR BUILDING EVACUATION
These
procedures are designed for use any time the building alarm
sounds, whether it is a drill or a real emergency. Drills
will be held each semester and will not be announced to students
and staff ahead of time. Some drills will take place during
the day, others in the evening. Take any sounding of the
alarm as a potential emergency. Students and staff need to
know what is expected to help us maintain a safe and secure
atmosphere in the building.
WHEN YOU HEAR AN ALARM
When you hear
the alarm, take it seriously.
Take your
keys, close your door, and proceed quickly down the nearest
unblocked stairwell or directly out the nearest exit.
As you leave,
turn off any hazardous machinery or open flames.
Elevator
power will be shut off, so do not try to use the elevator.
If you exit
down a stairwell, note any disabled person waiting for
assistance. Also note any friend or colleague waiting with
them. Once on the ground, tell the Campus Safety Officer
the stairwell, the floor, and, if you know, the name(s) of those
waiting. In an extreme case where you must help to evacuate
a disabled person from the stairwell, ask them how to safely
carry or assist them.
Once outside,
check in with the Security Officer:
On the Fort
Lauderdale Downtown Campus go to the far side of the parking
lot
On the Davie
Campus go to the grassy area east of the LA breezeway
On the
SeaTech Campus go to the east side of the parking lot
IF YOU HAVE A DISABILITY THAT LIMITS MOBILITY
Proceed to an
evacuation area - the nearest unblocked stairwell or exit
way.
Ask others
who are going downstairs or leaving the exit area to notify the
Campus Safety Officer that you are waiting for assistance.
Make sure they know your name and your location.
In case of a
real emergency, professional staff will meet you where you wait
and take you to safety. In case of a fire or evacuation
drill, you and any person assisting you will be permitted to wait
in the stairwell or the exit area.
