Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies within the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters invites the public to attend several events scheduled for Women’s History Month on its Boca Raton, Davie and Jupiter campuses. The events have been organized to encourage students and the public to learn more about women’s issues. All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

Colloquium: Images Of Women: A History Of France In Algeria Through Jacques Ferrandez’S Graphic Novel Series Les Carnet D’Orient
Wednesday, March 3, from 3 to 4 p.m., Arts and Humanities Building, room 205
Carla Carlage, assistant professor in the department of Languages, Linguistics and Comparative Literature at FAU, will discuss Ferrandez’s portrayal of the place of women during the French occupation of Algeria.
Discussion Panel: Women In Politics
Thursday, March 4, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

This panel discussion will be opened with the lecture presentation “Women in United States Politics: Review of National, Regional and Local Trends,” with Alicia Jencik, visiting instructor in FAU’s department of political science. Panelists include Dr. Jean L. Enright, commissioner, Port of Palm Beach; Anne M. Gannon, tax collector, Palm Beach County; Addie Greene, former commissioner, Palm Beach County; Tara Laxer, former chief of staff to Florida State Senator Ted Deutch; Suzanne Mulvehill, Lake Worth City Commissioner, District 4. The event will be moderated by Dr. Kitty Oliver, adjunct professor of communications and Women's Studies professor at FAU. Admission to this event is $10.
Storytelling: In Praise Of Older Women: A Celebration Of Stories
Wednesday, March 17, from 3 to 4:15 p.m., Arts and Humanities Building, room 205
Roslyn Bresnick-Perry, a professional storyteller who won the 2007 National Storytelling Network Lifetime Achievement Award, will present this unforgettable portrait of older women.

FAU’s Chamber Soloists concert dedicates this concert to the woman composer Alba Rosa Vietor. Music will be performed by violinist David George and pianist Leonid Treer. Art songs will be by Pauline Viardot, Birgit Fioravante, mezzo soprano, and Heather Coltman, piano.
Conference: French Cultures Of Embodiment
Thursday, March 25 – Saturday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Majestic Palm Room, Student Union
This three-day international conference is hosted by the FAU Center for Body, Mind and Culture and the department of languages, linguistics and comparative literature. Lecture: Black Women, Crime And Violence In Georgia, 1865-1917

“Black Women, Crime and Violence in Georgia, 1865-1917” will be presented by Talitha LeFlouria, assistant professor in the FAU department of history. LeFlouria will talk about the critical role Black female prisoners played in the building of Georgia’s industries during the post-emancipation era.
Forum: Issues In Women’S Health: Research, Public Health Policy And Advocacy

The second annual Women’s Leadership Forum will host keynote speaker Elizabeth Thompson, senior vice president, medical and scientific affairs of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, with “Research with Impact: Changing Outcomes for Women Around the Globe.” Other speakers include Kathy Schilling, Boca Raton Community Hospital; Rhonda Swan, Palm Beach Post; Michelle McGovern, office of U.S. Senator Bill Nelson; Judith Selzer, Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast; Dr. Paula Thaqi, Broward County Public Health Department; and Lucille Guzman, Breast Care Education Program of Boynton Beach. Lecture: Contesting Borders: Black Feminist Contributions To International Human Rights

Performance: Vagina Monologues
Saturday, March 27 at 8 p.m.; Sunday, March 28 at 2 p.m.

The play “Vagina Monologues” is made up of a series of monologues written by Eve Ensler. Ensler bases these monologues on more than 200 conversations she had with women about sex, female empowerment, female relationships and violence against women. General admission tickets cost $10, and is free for students.
