News and Announcements

Since 2011, FAU sociologist Patricia Widener has involved undergraduate students in research projects on climate change, social movements, and environmental justice issues in South Florida. In 2016, undergraduate students Jessica Marino, Celene Andreano and Krizia Kracker (left to right below) presented their research on the sociology of oil & tourism, climate change in the media, and genetic modification respectively at the annual Broward Student Research Symposium. Jessica Marino presented her research project at the Southern Sociological Society’s annual meeting in 2016 in Atlanta; and Celene Andreano presented hers in 2015 in New Orleans.

Professor Widener and students Martha Eichloff, Marcella Ahumada, Ana Marie Estrada, Jacquelyn Anderson (left to right) and Carmen Rowe (not pictured) also co-authored a chapter “Climate Action and Literacy through Creativity and Conversations” in Systemic Crises of Global Climate Change: Intersections of Race, Class, and Gender (Routledge Press, 2016). This chapter began as individual reflections and creative projects for a class on climate and disaster, and developed into a chapter on how our understandings and embodiment of gender, ethnicity and migration stories enable conversations on climate change and sustainability in South Florida.
