Stephanie Alvarez (MA Sociology, 2015)
"I am currently in my second Master’s program, with the Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Florida Atlantic University . My research involves content analysis of animated pornography analyzed from an ecofeminist perspective and also looks at online deviance of internet cultures. My sociology degree showed me the importance of praxis work and cultivated the activist I am today. I have been active with the Coalition of Immoklee Workers and joined them in the March against Wendy's and their refusal to join the CIW's Fair Food Program. I currently work for Planned Parenthood as a Student Data Manager for the FAU chapter of Planned Parenthood's Generation Action student organization. I worked with other student leaders to start this chapter on campus and we had a successful first semester in which we brought Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood's President to campus for a student event on the importance of voting. My experience in the sociology MA program also prepared me for academic conferences. My first time presenting at a conference was during my first year in the sociology program and in my second year I even presented at the American Sociological Association's national conference. I plan on applying to PhD programs after I graduate from the Women, Gender, Sexuality studies MA program. I am grateful for the sociology department's encouragement before, during, and after my time with them. I would not be where I am today if it were not for the experience and knowledge I gained in that program."
