PJHR invites submissions to the Certificate Program

The Peace, Justice and Human Rights (PJHR) Initiative invites faculty to submit their course(s) to be added to the PJHR Certificate. This Certificate promotes the study and understanding of peace, social justice and human rights issues and is predicated on the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge, recognizing different theories, methodologies and content in the development of courses. To successfully complete the Certificate, students are required to take 15 credit hours from a list of interdisciplinary courses, taught throughout the University’s curriculum (the current curriculum can be found at: www.fau.edu/pjhr/academics/education-and-curriculum.php).

We are inviting faculty from all colleges and disciplines to submit their course(s) for addition to our curriculum. Submitted course applications will be evaluated by the PJHR Curriculum Committee for consideration. [1] Once a course has been approved, the Curriculum Committee will determine in which part of the Certificate curriculum the course will be added.

In deciding whether a course should be approved, the Curriculum Committee will be guided by the following considerations:
(1) How often the course is offered on a semester/yearly basis.
(2) Whether the course is part of a major requirement.
(3) Whether 75% of the course content deals with one or more of four signature themes of the Certificate.

In order for the PJHR Curriculum Committee to consider a course for the PJHR Certificate, a faculty member must submit the following: (1) Course Approval Form and (2) a current copy of the course syllabus. If submitting multiple courses, each course must have both items. The Course Approval Form is located at: www.fau.edu/pjhr/academics/Course%20Approval%20Form.pdf.

Please submit the form and syllabus to pjhr@fau.edu with the subject line “Course Addition.” The deadline for submitting courses is March 12, 2018. Faculty members will be notified of the decision of the Curriculum Committee by May 1, 2018. The revised Certificate is subject to review under established governance policies.

[1] Any course that does not have a special topics designation that has been created as a result of a previous PJHR Curriculum Grant will automatically be added to the Certificate.
