Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) presents the third annual evening of cocktails, dinner, theater and discussion on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Arts Garage at 180 NE First St. in Delray Beach and will feature the play “I and You.” For tickets, call 561-450-6357 or visit artsgarage.org.
The evening will include a dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; the play from 7 to 9 p.m.; and discussion with Artistic Director Louis Tyrell and the actors from 9 to 9:30 p.m. “I and You,” written by Lauren Gunderson, tells the story of Caroline, a white teenager who spends most of her time at home due to illness, and Anthony, an African American classmate who shows up at her house to help with homework. As these two mismatched teens work together on a school project about Whitman's use of pronouns in the poem "Song of Myself," they slowly reveal their fears and aspirations to each other.
“‘I and You’ is unforgettable,” according to “Washington Speaks.” “It hums along at a great pace, but the ending will leave you gasping. While you predict the last scene, be ready to drop jaw.”
All proceeds will support WGSS. WGSS is housed in FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. The center houses an interdisciplinary program that offers a masters degree, graduate certificate and undergraduate certificate. Courses are taught by nationally and internationally known faculty from a variety of disciplines. For more information about WGSS, call 561-297-3865 or visit www.fau.edu/WomensStudies.
