Lecture Details 'Hitler and the Decisions for the Final Solution'

The 2014 Florida Atlantic University John O'Sullivan Memorial Lecture will address "Hitler and the Decisions for the Final Solution." The lecture, presented by Christopher R. Browning, one of the most distinguished scholars of the Holocaust currently working, will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. in the University Theatre, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.fauevents.com or by calling 800-564-9539. FAU faculty, staff and alumni tickets are $10 and students are $5 with an ID at the Box Office in the Student Union.

Browning's books include "Ordinary Men" and "Origins of the Final Solution." His research focuses on Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. He has written extensively about three issues: Nazi decision and policy making in regard to the origins of the Final Solution; the behavior and motives of various middle and lower echelon personnel involved in implementing Nazi Jewish policy; and the use of survivor testimony to explore Jewish responses and survival strategies.

Browning received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He taught at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. for 25 years, before moving to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 1999. He has been an expert witness at various trials of accused Nazi criminals in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as in the "Holocaust denial" trials of Ernst Zundel in Toronto (1988) and Irving vs. Lipstadt in London (2000).

The mission of the John O'Sullivan Memorial Lectureship has been to provide students, secondary school teachers, faculty, and public guests with exposure to a distinguished historian whose lecture/presentation broadens and deepens understanding of the major thematic and conceptual aspects of 20th century American history relevant to O'Sullivan's specialties. Over the years, FAU has hosted scholars of World War II, the Vietnam War, the Nuclear Age, the Holocaust, modern American culture, and 20th century political and diplomatic affairs.
