The University Galleries and the Department of Visual Arts and Art History at Florida Atlantic University will present the 2017 Annual Juried Student Exhibition from Thursday, March 24 through Friday, April 7 in the Ritter Art Gallery, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ritter Art Gallery. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
With the goal of making art available to everyone on campus, the Juried Student Exhibition is held annually and is open to all FAU students to participate. Students may submit up to three works each in a variety of media including photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, sound, video, graphic design, architecture and multimedia installation. Last year, the 2016 Annual Juried Student Exhibition achieved a record-high 140 student submissions, of which select works were also displayed at the 2016 Art Boca Raton Contemporary Art Fair.
This year, local artists Michelle Weinberg and Sibel Kocabasi will jury the exhibition. Weinberg is a multimedia artist whose work is included in the Cyan Gallery in Barcelona, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and the Nordisk Kunts Platform in Norway. In addition, she has served as artistic director at the Art and Cultural Center of Hollywood and is currently the creative director of Fort Lauderdale’s Girls’ Club. Sibel Kocabasi is a Turkish painter with a background in traditional Turkish arts. She exhibits both nationally and internationally and has curated several group exhibitions including “Outside The Box” at Whitespace Mordes Collection in West Palm Beach and “Undertow” featuring the work of South Florida artists in Istanbul, Turkey. Furthermore, she has been involved in teaching at FAU, Palm Beach State College, the Armory Art Center, the Lighthouse Center, and Very Special Arts. Weinberg and Kocabasi’s final selections will showcase FAU’s top artistic talent, as well as the full spectrum of artistic diversity and disciplines being pursued at FAU.
With the support of the University Galleries, this exhibition is produced and organized by FAU students for FAU students with the ultimate goal of providing both an opportunity for them to showcase their work in a professional environment as well as develop valuable professional skills as both working artists and exhibition administrators. This exhibition is made possible in part by the FAU Student Government, the University Galleries, the Department of Visual Arts and Art History, the Painter’s Forum and the Art History Society. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. The University Galleries are closed Sunday and Monday.
