Reception and Performance with Elisabeth von Trapp

by FAU College of Arts and Letters | Monday, Mar 23, 2015

The Advisory Board of Florida Atlantic University's School of the Arts in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will host a reception and performance with Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp of "Sound of Music" fame, on Monday, April 20, 2015 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Eleanor R. Baldwin House, which is located at 555 NW 20th Street on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased by emailing gvorsas@fau.edu or calling 561-297-2337.

Von Trapp's visit to South Florida comes during the 50th anniversary year of the release of the "Sound of Music," the movie starring Julie Andrews that is based on the story of the von Trapp family. This visit will offer guests the rare opportunity to hear von Trapp perform and share the real story behind the "Sound of Music" in an intimate setting.

For von Trapp, "the sounds of music" are part of her earliest memories. She was born and raised in Vermont and has been singing professionally since childhood, enthralling audiences from European cathedrals to Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center. Inspired by her father Werner von Trapp's guitar playing and singing, the young von Trapp has carried on the legacy of the internationally renowned von Trapp family singers while creating her own artistic style. Critics have called her voice "hauntingly clear," "joyfully expressive" and "simply beautiful." Her concert repertoire includes Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Favorite Things" and "Edelweiss," Mozart's "Lieder," Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro," and pop classics like "A Whiter Shade of Pale," along with her own compositions.

The event is being underwritten by Marta and Jim Batmasian, with all proceeds to benefit FAU's School of the Arts.

"When I heard Elisabeth perform a year ago, I realized she had inherited the talent and personality of her grandmother," said Marta Batmasian. "Her musical performance was enhanced by family anecdotes, giving an intimate glimpse to this fascinating family's real life and traditions not seen in the movie. Elisabeth carries the legacy of a family that has made a profound impact on more than one generation. This premier event at FAU will give the audience a chance to be transported on a journey along with von Trapps."

FAU's Making Waves Award will be presented to von Trapp at the event. This award was launched by the School of the Arts in 2012 as an opportunity to recognize artists who have made a significant contribution to the arts and education on a regional, national or international scale.  Past recipients have included Broadway legend and musical theatre composer Charles Strouse and actor, director and educator André De Shields.
